The Australian Skilled - Independent Visa (subclass 189) is an Australian skilled visa for skilled workers who are are skilled and qualified in terms of education and experience but do  not sponsored by an employer, a state or territory, or a family member. A visa holder can live and work permanently anywhere in Australia.

1. You may apply for subclass visa 189 if  you  meet the following requirements:

• You are under 45 years of age at the time of visa lodgment
• Your occupation must be listed on Medium and Long Term Strategic skill List (MLTSSL 2018)
• You must score a minimum eligibility of 60 points in the Australia Immigration point test
• You must have a proficient level of English language
• Your educational qualification should be equivalent to the Australian qualification standards
• Meet the health requirements
• Meet the character requirements

2. Check if your occupation or profile is present in the main Skilled Occupation List (SOL) This visa is only available to people who can fill a position on this list.

3. The Immigration process works on a point system based on the applicants’ age, qualification, work experience, language ability etc. which enables the applicant to apply for Australia permanent residency. 

4. After that , an applicant must complete a skill assessment test.You must complete a Skills Assessment and obtain an acceptable score which is 60/100 in order to be eligible for the Subclass 189 visa. Your score must be meet that specified on your letter of invitation.

5. You will need to submit an Expression of Interest(EOI) through SkillSelect. The SkillSelect program  ask  questions related to your skills, background and relevant work experience. Your EOI will be seen by the Australian authorities as well as available to Australian employers who may be looking for someone of your skill-set to hire.  If your EOI meets the requirements of the visa and you obtain a sponsor or nomination , you be invited to apply for the 189 visa.

6. If your job has listed on the main SOL list then and have received the EOI, then you can apply for the Skilled Independent Work Visa.

7. At last  stage, you need to be highly patient as DIBP takes some time to finally decide on your visa application.You got your visa approved and now you can migrate to Australia permanently.
